Why are wordy presentation slides so mind-numbing?
Updated: Jan 5
To read words we must say them 'out loud' in our working memory, shifting them from our visual processing channel to our auditory processing channel. Try it! Read the words in the graphic below. Do you 'hear' an inner voice? That voice is what creates the cross-talk and resulting mental fatigue you experience during a presentation with wordy slides.
What to do as a presenter?
1) Put the gobs of info your audience may need into a pre-read or take-away document.
2) Ruthlessly reduce the amount of text you use in your slides. Keep them visual.
3) Display a black slide when a visual aid is not a compelling need for your audience so that your listeners look at you.
